In troubled times, we may wish to see that Shining Light on the Hill – you know, the light that shows us the way, that comforts us, that reassures us that we are not alone.
And yes. One day we might see that bright light over yonder — that is, if we are lucky. However, I suspect that we may be a long time waiting.
So what do we do in the meantime, especially when we need something, anything, to help us, to guide us?
I propose that we can seek another source of light — the light accessible to each and every one of us each and every day and at will.
What I speak of is an inner light, which we ignite by being it, even in the smallest of ways, by thoughtfully living our core values on a daily basis. Thus…
- When we want others to do better, we can be the best that we are capable of being in any given moment.
- When we want others to be more loving and compassionate, we can be more loving and compassionate in all our relationships.
- When we need soothing and reassurance, we can be a source of comfort and hope to those most in need.
- When we want to receive the gifts of belonging and inclusion, we can offer those gifts to others.
- When we want others to inspire us to change, we can be a source of inspiration for others in small ways and large through our own example.
- When we want a more peaceful world exemplified by justice, equality and respect, we can manifest those qualities in our daily dealings.
And so it goes.
What I am saying is this…
Instead of waiting for some magical light to shine a path forward, each of us can instead be a source of light, by living our core values, however imperfectly, each and every day.
And here’s a thought. If I do this and you do this and we inspire others to join us in this endeavor, then perhaps collectively we can be that Shining Light on the Hill.
