“The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction both are transformed.” Carl Jung
Communication, that many-layered interchange between us humans, is more than words. It’s more than concepts. It’s more than tools and skills, important as those things are.
To understand the true meaning of the word “communication”, we need to go back to its Latin root – communicare, which means “sharing”.
So real communication, communication in its most accurate sense, is heart-to-heart and soul-to-soul sharing. Communication is both verbal and non-verbal. It’s both what’s said and what’s shared between the lines. It’s also in the energetic field between people.
Communication Dismantles Walls
True communication seeks to understand as well as be understood. It joins minds, hearts and spirits. And as such it seeks the ultimate connection with another human being. It infuses depth and meaning into our relationships. It lifts us up. And at the same time it challenges us to be the best and the most compassionate that we can be. And thus it expands us beyond what we’ve known ourselves to be up till now.
True communication means dismantling the walls of separation between us and others. It means stepping away from our egoic need to get our own way.
True Communication means taking risks to let someone know who we are and to be open to who the other person is. This takes guts and dedication.
And so, if this is not a spiritual practice, than what is?
So let’s join together now and into the future to engage this deeply spiritual practice with dedicated minds and willing hearts, because we know now that authentic communication is the vital ingredient in what we most dearly seek to create: sacred, loving and deep connection with another human being.
“Communication leads to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing.” Rollo May
